A rather experimental album on Brume, making me think of classic industrial avantgarde acts like Nurse with Wound or Zoviet France. De Mange Machine, a project of Frenchman Patrice Duisit, treats the listener to estranging sound collages. The artist, who made two albums before, uses sounds coming from electronic generators, manipulated voices as well as various unrecognizable sources.
In general the sound is quite calm and minimal, mainly based on dry percussive elements and coloured with a wide range of seemingly random sounds sampled from all kinds of sources. Nevertheless the album is an intense affair through its strange combination of sounds and absence of familiar melodic structures. I got used to it though after a few listening turns and even disovered some dreamlike, unconscious qualities. An interesting creation for listeners who like to be challenged.

"Conscience" is the third album from French experimental electronic composer Patrice Duisit and perhaps one of the best and most interesting releases of 2004/2005. It is probably one of the most ambitious releases from French record label Brume Records as well. Unfortunately, "Conscience" is a limited edition release of only 300 copies.
Maybe not just an album but a work of art, it should be pointed out that it would seem as if absolutely nothing in "Conscience" was left to chance. From the music and text, to the artwork and design, everything in "Conscience" has some meaning, not unlike parts in a clockwork mechanism.
Seemingly picking up where "Gourmandise" left off, "Consience" is a more mature piece of work than that previous album (which was already an excellent release). Once more, the listener is taken in an exploratory voyage into the strangely beautiful, dream-like (and very personal) universe of the Eating Machine. Despite the apparent chaos, the progression of events in this universe is carefully orquestrated by an omnipresent but unseen clockwork mechanism composed by every component of the universe itself making it undeniably organic in the end. Not necessarily a paradox, if one looks around one's surrounding reality...
Musically, "Conscience" is an experimental/ambiental album that consists of carefully composed sound collages. One of the first things that become readily apparent when listening to "Conscience" is the meticulous and careful work that went into the recording and choice of the samples used in the sound collages. Similarly, the construction of the musical pieces shows Patrice Duisit to be extremely skilled and talented, he clearly knows what each track should convey but also how to achieve the effect. Another interesting aspect to "Conscience" is that it is extremely immersing, the music is composed so that the listener will hear what the composer wants to be heard. Even when used as background music, "Conscience" maintains a strong presence and does not fade into the background.
"Conscience" is an outstanding release which is a must-have, although one might find it a bit strange or unnerving at first. It is definitely worth acquiring and investing time and effort to apprehend and savour the weird sonic universe that is presented, with all its subtle intricacies.

Sensorielle et foisonnante, ludique et passionnante, la musique de De Mange Machine a su, depuis La Névrose de M.Untel (1999) et Gourmandise (2003), développer un univers qui puise ses sources dans l’environnement naturel et le quotidien pour un cinéma sonore fait de collages qui ne craignent pas la comparaison avec des formations comme HNAS et Nurse With Wound. Mais les explorations sonores de De Mange Machine, alias Patrice Duisit, sont avant tout une confrontation à ses propres questionnements, doutes, révoltes. Son dernier album, Conscience ou le Règne de l’Animal Malade (Brume Records, 2003) confirme le talent de DMM à évoquer l’énigmatique et le l’organique dans le cadre d’un imaginaire prégnant, bercé plus encore qu’auparavant par une atmosphère de mélancolie. Moins frénétique et plus nostalgique donc, Conscience ou le Règne de l’Animal Malade est également un superbe objet, au format livre, dépliable, ouvrant sur des fenêtres évoquant les méandres du cerveau. Fossiles, vieilles photographies, brouillard, branches tortueuses, horloges… Le disque, ponctué d’interludes, propose dix voyages au cœur de la conscience humaine dans un cheminement qui mène des portes de la délectation, de la corruption et de l’ennui vers l’au-delà et les mondes imaginaires. Un voyage donc qui prend des allures d’allégorie, tel un cheminement du pèlerin dans un monde trop insensé pour que la quête de sens elle-même n’induise le burlesque et le parodique. DMM maîtrise de plus en plus ses névroses pour notre plus grand plaisir. Superbe !

Demange machine CONSCIENCE où le règne de l'animal malade….
Ce diques est livré dans un somptueux emballage, peut être un des plus beaux qu'il m'ait été donné de voir jusqu'à présent. Le packaging étant habituellement l'apanage de DIVINE COMEDY, cette fois BRUME s'est surpassé. Il s'agit d'un livret dépliant A5 une esthétique tout à fait ravissante, les couleurs et les montages exprimant fortement ce mal être philosophique de la conscience et de la nature humaine qui apparemment posent matière à penser pour DE MANGE MACHINE.
Le contenu musical lui est intimiste, très ambiant , expérimental et bruitiste parfois. L'introspection à laquelle mène l'univers de cet artiste, nous guide tout droit à une profonde méditation glaciale , la réflection qui en émane est inquiétante et dubitative, le voyage tortueux et escarpé. Mais chaque bien acquis dans la difficulté n'en a que plus de valeurs. Ce magnifique objet est limité à 300exemplaires , c'est très peu à vous de voir , mais vous auriez tort de vous en priver !!!

Schon der Titel ist ja ein kleines Mysterium, die Musik dieser französischen Gruppe ein Großes. Aber das soll nicht negativ gemeint sein. Was De Mange Machine auf diesem Album praktizieren, kann man schwer in eine Schublade stecken. Tatsächlich ist dieser Sound so kunstvoll gestrickt, die Melodien so wirr wie klar, die Flächen so vertrackt wie eindeutig: Es ist hohe Kunst. Das Projekt versteht sich sehr gut auf das Erstellen von apokalyptischen Synthieflächen mit einem recht eigenwilligen Drumprogramming. Die zum Teil auch sehr surrealistischen Klangcollagen wirken auf das erste Hören vielleicht abschreckend, aber nach einiger Zeit taucht man doch in diese eigenartige und bizarr anmutende Klangwelt ein. Es ist keine gewöhnliche elektronische Tanzmusik, sondern mehr was für die eigenen vier Wände. Genaues Zuhören ist hier absolute Pflicht. „Conscience“ heißt ja soviel wie „Bewusstsein“. Dieses wird aber bald in die Irre geführt und gleichsam ausgeschaltet. Würde man Brétons „Surrealistisches Manifest“ vertonen, würde es wahrscheinlich so klingen.
