Prospero’s new double CD, “Spreading the Infection” draws together sonic elements and innovative artists from different industrial music genres.

As a veteran industrial DJ, Prospero has successfully cross-mixed these sub-genres many times to create mass appeal on the dance foor.

Prospero is a Toronto based industrial dj and the man behind sub.session.media. Spreading The Infection is his first release (after a limited CDR in 2003) and to most people this will be the first they ever hear from him, though he has contributed tracks to several compilations allready.
On this 2CD set Prospero presents many musical styles to the listener. Industrial is what it all counts up to, but the parts are noise, EBM, ambient, trance, drum & bass, and many more. They all seem to fit into the musical tracks and together are responsible for the dark undertone of this album. The variety of styles somehow blends into a style that defines Prospero. A style that is much to my liking indeed. No way to describe the style in short everything I think of falls short, from dark drum & noise to EBM soundscapes, they just don't fit.
But just creating a 2CD album out of nothing, clearly was not enough for Prospero. So he also went out to friends with his tracks and had some remixed by people many will know, like This Morn Omina, Nerve Filter, Displacer, Converter, Flint Glass to name a few. And indeed the tracks came out strong. The originals aren't on the album anymore, so no way to compare them, but the remixes that made it onto the album do taste like more.
An old concept, that we don't encounter that much anymore, also made it to this album: the collaboration. Four of the tracks on this album were co-created with other acts. Especially listen to "Co:man:d" that was created with Converter, Manufactura, Displacer and S:cage and which came out as the best track on this album, but also check out "Let The Planet Burn" (collaboration with Battery Cage) and "Broadcast of The Coming Dawn" (collaboration with Pneumatic Death).
So overall, a great album that all industrial fans should buy.

Pour cette sortie, le Canadien Wade Anderson, également créateur du label sub.session, s'est associé pour l'occasion à Brume Records.
Ce double cd au visuel vert de gris représentant un bâtiment en brique (une abbaye?) encerclé par la végétation, attire d'emblée notre attention par son côté froid et sombre. Et ce n'est que le début!
"Spreading the infection" regroupe pas moins de presque 2 heures de musique aux accents dark-indus-electronica: 11 titres originaux et 11 remixes dispersés, se mélangeant dans des ambiances assez variées (infection au son electro-dark digne d'un :Wumpscut:, insomnia au son electro-teck dance floor, kill the body , the world that i see au son indus, contagion & rebirth au son drum'n bass...), teintés de nappes synthétiques ambiantes et secoués par des rythmiques industrielles apocalyptiques implacables (fury of the tempest par This Morn'Omina, storm front par Nervefilter, eye of the storm par Displacer...). Voilà le point fort de l'oeuvre: atteindre les limites des genres sans jamais basculer dans l'extrême.
Et comme dirait un certain barbu: "l'infection mentale commence avec des douleurs lancinantes" et se propage aux rythmes frénétiques de Empusae, Remain Silent, Pneumatic Detach, Converter, Flint Glass... Que de convulsions sonores en perspective!

Fruit de la collaboration des labels Brume Records et Sub.session.media, voilà un objet aux atours de un tantinet trompeurs, si l’on en juge l’artwork et la typographie pas franchement dans le canon electro-indus (et ça n’est pas un reproche, au contraire), mais au contenu diablement réjouissant. Mélange de titres originaux de Prospero, de collaborations et de remixes des titres présents en parallèle, se rejoignant tous sur une toile de fond eschatologique fantastique, "Spreading the Infection" tape dans tous les étages du rayon musique électronique sombre pour le plus grand bonheur des oreilles connaisseuses (et des tympans assourdis). Les originaux vont du beat bien lourd et profond qui frétille peu à peu sur fond de grincements sinistres et de bruits métalliques ("Parasitic") à la trance plus posée sur "Insomnia", en passant par l’hymne pour androïde obsessionnel compulsif ("Burn") et l’electro-indus frénétique ("Kill the body"). Côté remixes, si tout n’est pas à se pâmer, on retrouve avec plaisir la patte indus-trance inimitable de This Morn Omina, ("Fury of the tempest"), les rythmiques hypnotiques d’Empusae ("Karoshi"), l’indus salement rugueux et chaotique de Remain Silent ("Kill the body"), l’electronica sombre, élégante et rythmée de Displacer (également présent sur deux collaborations tout aussi réussies), le breakbeat concassé de Pneumatic Detach, ou encore, pour le volet le plus noisy, Converter, qui a ramené son rouleau-compresseur de basses et ses voix étouffées pour l’occasion, et S:cage, qui brouille "Fragments and splinters" avec jubilation. A noter, pour les collaborations, un immense brûlot purement indus brut de décoffrage ("Co:man:d") mêlant Prospero à Converter, Manufactura, Displacer et S:cage (rien que ça !) et qui vaut vraiment le détour.
En somme, "Spreading the infection" est un album complet, mûr et riche et tout ce qu’il y a de plus recommandable.

C'est en collaboration avec l'excellent label Canadien SUB SESSION RECORDS que BRUME RECORDS nous livre un de ces 2 derniers disques (l'autre étant DEMANGE MACHINE). SUB SESSION est le label qui a produit récemment entre autre EMPUSAE cher à notre cœur à tous ici.Je ne vous cache pas que ce disque est ce que j'ai entendu de mieux depuis très longtemps, cela surclasse toutes les sorties industrielles récentes.
Il est composé concrètement donc de 2 cds avec 6 morceaux de PROSPERO et 16 morceaux de remix ou collaborations diverses, avec des noms prestigieux comme S.CAGE , THIS MORN'OMINA , EMPUSAE , CONVERTER , FLINT GLASS , DISPLACER , REMAIN SILENT , NERVE FILSTER etc …
Comme pour THIS MORN'OMINA on ressent dans la musique de PROSPERO une influence générale du mystique et du tribal qui donne une dimension spirituelle importante à la direction de leurs compositions , on reconnaît d'ailleurs bien volontiers également une inspiration profonde de disques comme les NOISE UNIT , XORCIST ou des vieux DELERIUM, très ancrée dans cette veine d'atmosphère sacrée et nébuleuse.
Suite à cette base tous les artistes invités à cette orgie sonore mettent leur grain de sel et s'approprient les compositions de PROSPERO pour donner leur vision propre de SPREADING THE INFECTION. Il serait injuste et déplacé de mettre en avant un seul de ces morceaux tant le résultat varié et jouissif , est homogène au niveau de la qualité. Je suis certain que ce disque figurera dans le top 5 final des disques de l'année 2005, que cela soit écrit et que cela s'accomplisse !!!!

Under great developing french label brume records on the market is released next electro work, that evokes to sound, that this label for some time supports. Prospero, is one man project, that has contributed on his cd own remix tracks and use them on both discs. Often own production is here represented with six songs and it prolongs on momental rhythmick, industral revolution of pulsing rhythms, that are placed on dominant percussions followed with ambiental electronics. Like I have already mentioned, most of the work on this discs are remix versions, eventually collaborations from the workshop of interesting groups, that names speaks for themselves: This morn omina, Nerve filter, Re_agent, Vertigo, Empause, remain silent, Displacer, Pneumatic detach, Xorcist, Flint glass, Converter, Manufactura, Batetery cage, S:cage, vo1d. Everyone, who had at least something with this artists will make a picture about what is this double cd, and evenmore creative and various selection of songs wouldn't hurt by my opinion, but who looks for minimalistic sound and danceable, industrial like electronics, these cds are that right kind of transfuzion...

Aliens

How am I going to even attempt to write a review that isn't too glowing and too tainted with obvious bias, a review that will appear as though I have actually attempted to view this release objectively? This was what I wondered to myself as soon as Spreading the Infection, the debut (styled) release of Prospero fell into my hands, as it was a certainty that this release was going to please me.

I've been a big fan of Prospero's music from the very beginning, as seen by the fact that Prospero has appeared on every single CD release that I've been a part of creating: both Saturation Bombing compilations, a bonus track on "[tik] co:man:d [sic]" and a new awesome track on my latest brainchild, the brand new bugs crawling out of people debut compilation, "revelation". But even if we ignore all this (and ignore the more than obvious plug for "revelation", the best compilation you'll hear in a long time), this double CD has much more to offer and to impress the already impressed, with remixes by This Morn' Omina, Empusae, Remain Silent, Flint Glass, s:cage, Displacer, Xorcist, Vo1d and more. All of these remixes are by bands whose music I enjoy thoroughly. That Prospero has also sought to expand on the idea by doing collaborative tracks with the likes of Pneumatic Detach, Displacer, re_agent and Battery Cage is an incredible idea (so simple and yet so often ignored). He does what so many other bands fail to do, and reaches out towards other styles to use them as a catalyst for adding something extra to his music. By nature, Prospero tracks have no vocals, but now a few do, with the assistance of Justin Trip (re_agent) and Tyler Newman (Battery Cage).
And of course, there is the addition of the track co:man:d which is a Prospero remix of the live jam of converter, manufactura, displacer, s:cage and prospero that ended the legendary [tik] co:man:d [sic] concert.
So you see, I was already expecting something quite awesome before even putting the CDs into the player. That Prospero would surpass my expectations was something that I expected and received. To put it simply: This is, in my admittedly biased opinion, a fucking awesome release.

Squid.

Spreading the Infection is released on Brume records, and since the last release i got from that label, namely Escape by OTX, was a very good one, my expectations were set high for this release. Prospero shows us a stunning example of energetic and innovative electronics on this double cd. The music is diverse and well composed. A comparison with Future Sound of London meets Coverter therefore is not far out of place. Innovative? Not as much regarding the actual content of the music of Prospero, but more regarding the combination of different styles from electronic and industrial music. Not surprising if you read mister Prospero has years of experience as a DJ with this kind of music. ‘Spreading the Infection’ shows a rich mix if industrial, ambient, noise, EBM and trance. Not only diversity in styles but also in remixers co-operating in producing the tracklist. Illustrous names like This Morn’ Omina, Nerve Filter (A23’s Tom Shear), Empusae, Displacer, Pneumatic Detach, Flint Glass, Converter, Manufactura, S:Cage and Vo1d give a bit of a impression what to expect on this double cd. Some of the artists even have co-written some of the original tracks. The tracks are equally spread on the cd in as many remixes as original tracks, due to which the music is experienced as one constant flow, without ugly stilistic breaks between tracks. I am impressed.

Gothtronic

Gleich zwei CDs bieten Prospero an. Und das ist ja heutzutage eigentlich schon Usus, nicht nur eine Scheibe, sondern gleich das Doppelte anzubieten. „Spreading The Infection“ aber wartet nicht mit zwei ganz unterschiedlichen Alben auf, sondern eigentlich mit einer Mischung aus Zusammenarbeit, Remixen und weiteren neuen Studiosongs. Es fällt auf, dass sich das Projekt nicht nach dem alten System verfahren, das besagt: erste CD die neuen Songs und zweite CD die Remixe. Hier werden tatsächlich die beiden Pole zusammengeführt, was für viele beachtenswerte Gegensätze führt. In erster Linie besticht das Album durch seine Vielfalt. Hier wird alles zusammengetragen und vermengt, was die Synthesizer eben hergeben. Drum’n’Bass, Trance, EBM, Industrial und so weiter. Das Ergebnis ist durchaus interessant und nicht zu verachten. Nur machen die Songs den Eindruck, dass sie bewusst nicht für die Massen geschrieben sind. Wenigstens braucht man mindestens zwei Anläufe, um mit dieser Platte warm zu werden. Und bei zwei mal elf Stück ist das eine langwierige Angelegenheit. Die Remixe, unter anderem von Flint Glass oder This Morn’ Omina belegen, dass hier mit Liebe gearbeitet wurde und auch die Kollaboration zwischen Prospero und anderen Bands schien sehr fruchtbar verlaufen zu sein. Offensichtlich bei zwei CDs! „Spreading The Infection“ ist für Fans von etwas vertrackter Industrialmusik auf jeden Fall zu empfehlen.

Elektrauma

La prima impressione non è quella che conta

Ammettiamolo, la prima cosa che passa per la mente trovandosi in mano questo album non si può definire un giudizio positivo. Sarà che siamo italiani e un nome come Prospero non ci sembra molto adatto a un progetto di elettronica, sarà che il nome in se è buffo o sarà anche per una copertina che con l´album vero e proprio non c´entra molto e per di più lo fa sembrare qualcosa di decadentemente gothico, ma, appena ti trovi per le mani `Spreading The Infection´, ti viene subito da pensare male.

Per fortuna non è così. Per prima cosa Prospero è un dj e questo doppio cd è una raccolta dei suoi lavori. Inoltre qui dentro ci trovate parecchi nomi pesanti della scena electro più oscura. Il primo che balza all´occhio è ovviamente This Morn´ Omina e già questo in se fa cambiare parecchio la prospettiva. Metteteci dentro Assemblage 23 sotto falso nome, Nerve Filter, e personaggi come Converter e Displacer e vi sarà chiaro che l´album un ascolto lo merita eccome.

Il risultato è un lavoro che spazia da battiti E.B.M., secchi, molto secchi e con su una voce figlia di :wumpscut:, a momenti più vicini alla sfera idm, fino chiaramente a toccare le varianti della trance, etno quando c´è di mezzo Mr. Mika Goedrijk, harsh industrial se a remixare ci sono Empusae o Vertigo. `Spreading The Infection´ è così un buon lavoro: cupo, intelligente e ricco. Magari non sempre all´altezza, ma è anche vero che non ci si può aspettare un livello costantemente elevato in due ore di musica costruita con tanti remix e un mare di ospiti. Molto meglio di quanto lasci ad intendere.

Deux CD en un, voilà qui nous gâte, surtout quand on mesure la richesse et la variété des ambiances dont fait preuve le projet ! Wade Anderson le Canadien s’était davantage fait connaître par ses titres dispersés sur de nombreuses compilations et ses remixes que par l’édition limitée Cd-r de « A Storm Is Coming » sortie en 2003. Il faudra désormais compter sur ses apparitions live qui vont se multiplier suite à cette sortie, et comme l’homme a été DJ de nombreuses années, on ne peut que dire qu’il maîtrise le sujet.
Le premier disque s’ouvre avec un instru léger comme des bulles de champagne aux sonorités proches cependant d’un NIN (« Burn »), des vocaux féminins dignes d’un confessionnal en apesanteur (« Fury Of The Tempest »), un titre à la :wumpscut: (« Infection »), de l’agressivité (« Contagion And Rebirth »), du calme et de la fureur (« Storm Front »), un cabinet de curiosités pour automates des Frères Quay (« Karoshi »), deux orages magnétiques en faux jumeaux (« Kill The Body » et ses pales d’hélicoptères, « Eye Of The Storm » et son tonnerre), un bon titre dance-floor, terriblement groovy mais dont l’évolution tend vers la darkwave puis s’abîme en electro-indus à vocaux déchirés (« Insomnia »). L’ambiance globale reste très sombre, à l’image de la pochette : un bâtiment de pierres qui s’abandonne à la végétation. Ce disque noir est cependant tragiquement entraînant car on a toujours plaisir à se titiller le tympan à coups de distorsions acidulées (« Broadcast From The Coming Dawn »).
Le deuxième CD, après un démarrage plus introspectif, nous cueille par surprise avec ce qui est le titre le plus malsain : « Co:man:d » et poursuit en accentuant encore plus le mélange des genres. Le travail est énorme, les structures allient complexités et naturel, le son parfait construit des ponts musicaux tendus vers toutes sortes d’influences et de genres. Un imparable tube de dark electro industrielle, digne des premiers FLA (« Let The Planet Burn ») précède de peu un instrumental dans lequel des cordes synthétiques luttent contre la gangrène (« Fragments And Splinters »), « Kill The Body » joue davantage la carte de la techno musclée aux anabolisants EBM avant de laisser respirer les vagues maculées de carburant de « Parasitic ». Retour de l’hommage à NIN sur un « Action Of Rhythms » totalement décomplexé, « Spreading The Infection » est ainsi une œuvre qui réjouira à la fois les puristes et les curieux. Mais nous ne nous quitterons pas de sitôt, il reste à remettre le premier CD et à continuer d’apprendre par cœur chaque chapitre de ce manuel de médecine macabre. Qui refusera d’être contaminé ?
