Itching

2003

CD album / Brume 09

€ 10.00
With "Itching", Zonk't preserves his "touch" : relentless groove, a low and hypnotic bass, often a complex rhythmic architecture getting close to electronic industrial dub. Much more direct tracks, less dark but always very nocturnal where the laptop electronica takes over. One would think of click and cuts minimalist movement; not only with the microscopic precision of the rhythmic compositions, but also with its work on the sound and of its spatialization, but escapes its hermetism and offers a much more sensual version. One thinks of Plastikman after a training course with Techno Animal, Scorn or Pan Sonic.

Including 2 remixes by Flint Glass and Oil 10.

Multi-faceted artist, Laurent Perrier (ex-Nox), returns with the second album of his Zonk't solo-project on Brume Records. This new cd reveals a fresher click & cut electronica approach than
its dark industrial predecessor. Much lighter in tone, the compositions nevertheless display a freezing abstract dimension that makes the head turn! Unidentified beeps and clear noises come and go, and give the entertaining rhythm to this imaginary journey between fiction and hallucination. Those who enjoyed the latest KLINIK album and Brume's more electronca releases, should love this "itching" album. An unpredictable electronic dreamcatcher.

Side Line Magazine

With a history as a drummer in punk groups, label manager of Odd Size,
projects such as Nox, Cape Fear and creator of films, today Laurent
Perrier releases Itching under the name of Zonk’t. From Time To Time is
the opening track, building up the tension but never letting it go. This
album is less dark and more minimalistic, including remixes by Flint
glass and Oil10. Dreamsmaker, Dashboard and Sous Surveillance are just
some of the titles of interesting songs on Itching. The music by Zonk’t
holds good arrangements and variation brought by a good composer.
Relaxing ambient, trip hop, low fi, soft electro, you will bind it all
and more on this senevtyfour minutes long shiny disc.

Everything in the new album of French group indicates its modernist, innovative concept - and formulation, and name, and, in the first place, music. ZONK'.T - this is the experimental electronic project Laurent Perrier, in the past of perkussionista, guitarist and the vocalist of the industrial fate- group NOX. Today musician writes music for the contemporary choreographic settings and televisions, and also are removed documentary films about the dancing companies and vanguard ballet perfomansakh. "Itching" is the second album of project and consists of the tracks, which are been alternative versions previously the written choreographic and saundtrekovykh compositions. The tekhnoidnaya, minimalistichnaya and hypnotizing music ZONK'.T, undoubtedly, rodstvenna to the laboratory atmospheric- rhythmical experiments of Canadian VROMB, and this immediately strikes. Good this or is bad to decide to listeners, but it is necessary to recognize that infinite gruvy, fatty basses, rectified trajectories of texno- rhythms and miniature bit pulsations plus the cold atmosphere work in the case of ZONK'.T very well. Nemrachnaya, but also inanimate music of group also contains several microscopic click- n -cuts of zvuchkov, which it is easy to catch in transparent electrified embiyente after the massive and dense rhythmical lines. On the whole, album can be received as dynamic futuristic saundtrek, post-industrial background music or chain rhythmical reaction, broken into the stages according to the names of tracks. The club aspect of reliza to consideration does not be subject, because it is absent from the customary understanding, but unique power engineering in the music definitely is present and it is possible only to assume, with what strange dancing postanovkakh/sobraniyakh deals the discussion, when as the author of music appears Laurent Perrier. Further, kontseptual'nost' implies the presence of a certain sonic rod, specific form of the supply of material, but do not therefore await sharp variations in sounding ZONK'.T. All tracks on the album are similar to each other and among them it is complicated to isolate strong or weak. Complete program two class remiksa of associates on leyblu FLINT GLASS and OIL 10. Both are made in the firm style: the first group made accent to the gloomy, mysterious 3mbientno- industrial sounds and rigid, complex rhythms, and the second changed it created remiks on the base of melodious and dancing postkraftverkovskogo electro. To the album "Itching" besides fans VROMB also can focus attention the admirers of creation PAN SONIC or PLASTIKMAN. Before us notable person work, but not best among last relizov leybla Brume Records, that became for me one of the main discoveries in the outgoing year.

L'album débute par des boucles répétitives aux tonalités froides et métalliques (From Time to Time).

Composer Laurent Perrier has a quite active musical past. Before Zonk't he worked on various musical projects including Nox (where he was a percussionist, guitarist and a singer). He's also been involved in doing Film work for the famous French choreographer Olivier Bodin's show
"When." With his new project Zonk't, Laurent surrounds himself with microscopic click n' cuts precision and technoid dub synthetics. The result is his second (?) album entitled "Itching."

The sounds used on "Itching" are quite crisp, using many analog bleeps, bells and deep basslines, and in turn give "itching" a quite dynamic and fluent sound. "Dashboard" has an almost oldschool flavor to it, bringing back memories of Esplendor Geometrico, but in a more updated and atmospheric form. Some songs get a bit too fast and simplistic though,as is the case with "Gasped." Things get back on track though with"Dreamsmaker." Here we have slow fractured rhythms mixed with stuttering glitch electronics and technoid sounds. I especially like the way some tracks build from minimal noise components into full rhythmic compositions, this is best displayed on tracks like "Soft In The Middle" and "Speedball." The album ends with 2 remixes, one from Oil 10 and one from Flint Glass.

Fans of weird experimental techno, microscopic technoid beats and rhythmic sounds will find "Itching" enjoyable the most. The slower tracks on "Itching" are the best in my opinion. While not all tracks are memorable there's enough here to enjoy. Recommended listening nonetheless.

Zonk't is the latest release by multimedia artist Laurent Perrier of France. Zonk't is Laurent's second album under this moniker. The album is being released through the French industrial / electronica label Brume Records.

Zonk't is a very interesting release floating about in the vast ocean of modern electronica music today. The albums title "Itching" is hauntingly reminiscent of the character of the music. Working within a fusion of stylistic approaches and techniques the music of Zonk't is not easily explained. Blending strong elements of minimalist electronica, industrial, drum & bass, jungle, ambient and trance. One man many approaches. Zonk't seamlessly harnesses these various influences and directs them into a union of surprisingly original and engaging music.

The first thing to say about Zonk't is they are exclusively electronic music. There is no singing and very few if any acoustic instruments. Many of us coming from club scenes and raves may be thumped out on electronic music that moves the body but does little for the brain. If you've abandoned electronic music because of its monotony then this might be your chance to get your groove back.

The music on 'Itching' follows a relatively simple equation and delivers stunning results. The majority of the songs begin with slow minimalist bass lines at their core. The bass is hypnotic as it slowly builds up straining to exert itself. Laurent Perrier keeps a strong hold on the bass creating tension and a feeling of restraint through his control. Surrounding these subsonic echoes booming out of nothingness are swooping synthesizers and a variety of percussive and rhythmic elements. The architecture of the songs build slowly and with intent. What start out minimalist mutates into a complex dance of electronics. The rhythmic elements breathe life into the music and offer a counterpoint to the strictly constrained bass at the core of each song. Micro beats and drum & bass interludes break across the back drop of the music in spastic swirls. All of these elements weave together to create a dense yet comprehendible whole.

Though the music is entirely synthetic it emerges at times into an organic/synthetic hybrid. Some mutant form of Cyborg music that is clinical and computerized while emitting an emotional aura. The music is also embedded with a degree of intelligence. The song structures are intricately constructed and though its minimal at times your brain will be racing to interoperate what your hearing. After a few songs you fall into the tide of the music. It becomes easier to follow and you become more enveloped in it. I found it to be much more of a mind trip for me as opposed to a dance classic. Though the album did have me dancing at times.

I would suggest this release for Radical Faeries with an existing interest in electronica music. Especially those of you out there that are looking for something original and intelligent that deviates from the same old tired electronica. Futurists and people with an established interest in cutting edge experimental electronic music should try this album out as well. Faeries that like break beat, industrial, jungle and drum & bass should check this out as well. Faeries wanting an introduction to experimental/industrial music will also find Zonk't approachable and engaging. As the various subgenera of electronica music become less original and more occupied bands like Zonk't and labels like Brume Records continue to sustain us with new and original electronic music.

Laurent Perrier has quite a colourful and intense history in electro musical scene. After being a musician in a punk groups, opened his own record label (Odd Size), CD store and produced 20 albums (untill he ended with the Odd Size in 1998), he began working on other musical projects. He collaborates with various palette of artists: musicians, coreographers, video artists, etc.
After Falling Down Fearless of Bruises, Zonk't album from 1999 and split 12" with Electronicat from 2001, he offers electronic music enthusiasts Itching.
A listener gets a feeling of a coincidenceless precision in this music. Sharp sounds, clear rhythms and plenty of very interesting atmospheric sound effects. The music brings you overall that sense of certain minimalism (although there are plenty of different sounds and mixages) and ambience. Easy, uniform but yet far away from being boring.
As the label says: "Inventive, modern and rich, Itching should stand out as one of this year's best surprise."

Neversun
